Migraine and 3 Common Office Ailments and Some Prevention Strategies to Avoid Them

Women often hold jobs that require repetitive motion.  Or they maybe doing jobs that were not designed for their bodies.  A professor of Medicine and Public Health at Yale University identify some most common office ailments and some prevention strategies to avoid them:

1)  Migraine.  According to a medical doctor, if you suffer from disabling headaches you have a migraine.  Symptoms of migraine includes:

  • Throbbing or pounding pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to sound
  • Pain that is aggravated by activity

Not all of these symptoms are necessary to have a migraine.

Who gets migraine?

  • Up to 90%of migraine sufferers have a family history of migraine.
  • Women are said to be three times more likely to suffer from migraine than men.
  • The majority of migraines begin during the adolescence or early adulthood.  Women often suffer needlessly because they confuse migraines with tension, sinus or pre-menstrual headaches and they try to treat them with general pain medications or do nothing.  Untreated or treated correctly, a migraine can last for 4 to 72 hours, but with effected migraine medications, you can start getting relief from migraine in 45 minutes to an hour explain a medical director of the headache institute.

     Prevention Strategies:

Erratic sleep and eating schedules can contribute to headache.  So can poorly lit or badly designed work environments.  Maintain regular sleeping, exercising schedules and eating.  Stick to just one decaffeinated beverage a day since more could trigger a headache.  As you work, maintain good posture, sit in a chair with back support and adjust your workstation to your body says a medical doctor,  Migraine sufferers re especially vulnerable to color stimulation, so dim computer displays and avoid bright fluorescent lighting.

2)  Lower Back Pain.  Bending, frequent lifting, twisting can strain the back.  In addition, too little movement, such as sitting in the same position all day can make the back vulnerable to injury.  Only one percent of backache pain sufferers have disk injuries that require surgery.  For most patients, good posture, exercise stretching and weight loss can ease the pain.

     Prevention Strategies:

Regular exercise helps you remain physically fit and you are less vulnerable to injury.  Doing exercises to strengthen the abdominal and lower back two or three times a week is essential. 

When lifting heavy objects, always bend your knees, and use your legs rather than your back.  While sitting, use a chair with good support that doesn't put pressure on your knees.  You can invest in a good backseat.  Every hour, stand and stretch by placing your hands on your lower back and gently arch in back.

3)  Tendinitis.  It is inflammation of tendon tissue and often caused by overuse.  Tendinitis can caused by repetitive motion.  Unfortunately, incidents increase with ages as muscles and tendons lose elasticity.

                                                   

     Prevention Strategies:

Frequent breaks provide the best prevention. Take a break for 45 minutes, move around and stretch when it goes.

4)  Stress-related Illness.  A variety of workers including business executives, or people who work  with frequent tight deadlines have jobs that can result to a stress-related illness.  Constantly dealing with heavy workload is also stressful.  Studies show the women suffer twice as many stress-related illness as men.

     Prevention Strategies:

According to medical doctors although deep breathing, exercising and other stress reduction techniques can help, they only provide short-term relief.  To significantly reduce stress, a person needs to gain control of the situation.  Studies say single women are more likely to suffer from stress than married women.  The unattached life comes with anxieties of it's own, including single-handed managing a household and budget and chores.

Make a list of your work stresses then create a plan to control or avoid those.  If that doesn't work, evaluate how well your job fits your personality.  Sometimes it's the environment or you feel unchallenged by a dull job that can cause this stress.
