Headaches and migraines are unpleasant and usually stops you from doing what your doing. Do you feel severe and throbbing headaches on one side of your head? Are you having a visual distortion? Are you having nausea, vomiting, dizziness, cold hands and sensitivity to light and sound? If you are having these, you are experiencing migraine.

Headaches are inflammation of blood vessels in the scalp. The throbbing pains are results of vessels that contract and then expand. Doctors think that the hormones play a big role in the inflammation of the blood vessels and pain.

Most migraine sufferers are women because of the changing of the hormones during the menstruation cycle and ovulation. Food is also a factor that triggers migraine. Foods like aged cheese, chicken livers, citrus fruits, chocolate, red wine, monosodium glutamate, and preservatives found in smoked and processed meats. Other factors may include odors, anger, stress, high altitude and change in barometric pressure.

Diagnosis of migraines depends on the symptoms. They will also look at your family history. To rule out if it’s a tumor growing, an x-ray or other imaging studies maybe needed.

To avoid migraines from occurring, keep diary of attacks so it can be identified if the headache was triggered by food, environmental or emotional factor. Coping with anger and stress can reduce migraine attacks. Being relaxed can reduce the severity of the migraine. It is good to have a regular eating, sleeping and exercising schedules.

If the headaches is still severe and keeps recurring and is not alleviated with any aspirin, it is good to see your doctor to find out the problem. The doctors will give you a complete check up so they could rule out tumor or other causes of headaches. They may require you to have x-ray or a CT scan to see if there are abnormalities that causes headaches.

Most headaches are not dangerous but if the headaches are frequent it can impair the quality of life. It is best to see your doctor right away to get the correct diagnosis and be given a right medication. Make it a habit to relax as well. Your body needs time to regain the energies that was used. Drink lots of water and fluids. Get enough of sleep. Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It maybe an old saying, but it is true.
